Generally, no. Most U.S. insurance plans do not cover private newborn stem cell banking, cord blood and tissue banking. Some employers offer it as a benefit, and if you have a smaller health insurer, it is worth checking their coverage.

What happens to the newborn stem cell sample after 18 years?

With proper processing and storage, these stem cells do not expire on a timeline tied to your child’s age. It is critical to understand how these samples are processed. If not stored in optimal conditions, there could be a die off of cells over time. What typically changes at that point is decision-making authority: many banks require renewed consent or an account transfer once the child is a legal adult.

What if my child’s cells do not grow successfully during processing?
